How to Use This Guide
A balcony changes more than most growing spaces: the sun angle, wind, rain and temperature all shift through the year, and two plants side by side can need opposite treatment. Read this guide in three ways — by season, by plant, and one decision at a time before you pick up the…
01 Four-Season Care at a Glance
Compare the four recurring jobs across the year. Cells assume a temperate climate and a sheltered balcony; treat each one as a starting point and let what you actually observe decide.
02 Pothos, Mint & Rosemary: How Care Differs
Three very different plants: one forgiving, one thirsty, one dry-loving. The same balcony corner can suit one and stress another, so match each plant to its spot and its own watering rhythm.
03 Check the Soil Before You Water
Most balcony plant problems start with watering by habit instead of by soil. Run this check every time, and let the soil decide.
1. Look at the surface. Is the top of the soil light-coloured and dry, or still dark and damp?
2. Test below the surface. Push a finger, a chopstick or a moisture meter 2–3 cm into the soil. Note whether it feels dry, barely moist, or wet.
Here is the editable A4 guide in Word format, laid out in sage green, terracotta and cream white.
What's inside
- Cover block + example notice — marked "EXAMPLE · TEMPLATE" at the top, with a standing reminder to adjust for your climate and each plant's condition, repeated in the footer of every page and again at the end.
- 01 Four-Season Care at a Glance — one table comparing watering, light, ventilation and pest checks across spring, summer, autumn and winter.
- 02 Pothos, Mint & Rosemary — a comparison table showing how watering, light, and ventilation/pests differ, plus a one-line summary ("forgiving / thirsty / dry").
- 03 Check the Soil Before You Water — seven numbered decision steps (surface look → finger or chopstick test → read the result → depth per plant → pot weight → water properly → log it), with a decision-path box and a "when in doubt, wait a day" rule.
- 04 Printable Weekly Care Log — starts on its own page: week/plant/location/season fields, a seven-day table (soil before watering, watered, light, ventilation, pest check, notes) and ruled lines for observations and next week's adjustments.
All text, tables and colours are native Word objects, so you can edit wording, add rows or rebrand it. Page size is A4 with 1.9 cm side margins; fonts are Georgia for headings and Calibri for body text, which Word substitutes cleanly if missing.
One check I couldn't run: this computer has no Word/LibreOffice renderer, so I verified the structure (page size, all nine tables at full 17.2 cm width, repeated header rows, page break before the log) but not the final pixel rendering. If anything sits tight when you open it, tell me and I'll adjust the spacing.
